Once Upon A Time In America.

Conan the Republican While the legislature is fighting hand-over-fist to pass a new budget and ease the state's financial crisis, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger found some time to have a bit of elective surgery done to his knee, but wait a minute, "Hey, there was no Utilization Review!" But then this wasn't a work incurred injury was it! But what if it was?

Would he have to run the gauntlet of Utilization Review to get the surgery approved? How long would he have to wait to get a decision? Would his primary treating physician supply that UR doctor with ALL the necessary reports and X-Rays so that a reasonable decision could be made, or would they just go thru a dog-and-pony-show that would lead to an eventual denial of surgery due to a paucity of information and documentation which seems to be the status quo these days for the average injured California worker?

Is this the same guy who some 25+ years ago used to brag about the fact that he could go to the doctor of his choice and have all the chiropratic care and physical therapy that he needed for his work incurred injury to get better? What a short memory he has!

And what if that injury caused the governor permanent disability to the point that he could no longer pimp and pander for those special interest business friends of his? Would the Workers' Compensation insurer go on an expensive fishing expedition and dig back into his life and medical history and try to use his prior surgeries and genetic predispositions against him? And what about all that anabolic steroid use?

Let's look back....

  • 1982 - Back injury on the set of Conan the Barbarian.
  • 1997 - Replacement of aortic heart valve.
  • 2001 - Broken ribs from motorcycle crash.
  • 2003 - Rotator cuff injury on the set of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
  • 2006 - 15 stitches in his lip from motorcycle accident.
  • 2006 - Broken femur in his right leg from skiing.
It would seem that the governor is no stranger to occupational injuries.

And what impact would his daily exercise regimen have on exacerabting any of these prior injuries?

If you're a rich movie star like the governor, getting medical care for your ailments is as simple as a basic thought process. Just pull out the ol' wallet and peel off some hundreds! St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica seems to be Arnie's favorite treatment facility.

But what if you're an undocumented worker who toils daily in the hot sweltering fields of California, trying to eek out a living for your family in America. What happens when YOU get hurt on the job. What hoops do you have to jump thru to get simple, basic medical care for that injury?

What, you say your employer said he would pay for your medical care if you said it happened elsewhere, and you believed him? Yeah, right, until it gets too expensive, at which point he'll drop you like a lead balloon and call immigration on you if you protest. It isn't as simple as it sounds, is it!

From one immigrant to another? Think about it!
