76 Gas Station Azita Almasi pleaded guilty in Monterey County Superior Court today to a misdemeanor count of violating labor code by failing to secure Workers' Compensation insurance.

Almasi owns the Amerigas 76 gas station and mini mart on Main Street in Salinas. She was placed on three years' probation and must pay a $10,000 fine to the California State Treasury for the Uninsured Employers Fund.

Almasi was also ordered to maintain Workers' Compensation insurance for all employees and advised that a second or subsequent conviction has a mandatory minimum fine of $50,000.

The county District Attorney's Office was alerted a year ago Sunday by an investigator from the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement of the California Department of Industrial Relations, saying Almasi had failed to comply with multiple Stop Order citations.

District Attorney Investigator Martin Sanchez confirmed through the Morgan Hill office of the California Department of Insurance that Almasi did not have Workers' Compensation insurance for her employees. Sanchez then conducted surveillance on the business and interviewed Amerigas employees.

California law requires all employers to secure Workers' Compensation insurance for their employees so they have adequate medical coverage and other benefits for any work-related injuries that may occur.
